Datsun 120y – what a car!!!

Datsun is the name of the line of cars produced by Nissan the Japanese automobile company in the sixties. Production of the line stopped in 2004. Although this line of cars is till being made fro certain markets like in Sri Lanka, Africa and America. One of the most famous cars produced in this line was the Datsun 120y coupe. The name for the line came from the owners initials making the acronym DAT and wanting to represent Japan in their trademark they added sun for the land of the rising sun, and thus the name Datsun.

The Datsun 120y is also very popular in Australia. It was a car built for the person to just get around town and not spend a lot of fuel. It was a car meant for mothers, and wives who needed to go to the supermarket to shop and pick up their kids. It was in an affordable bracket with the insurance too being very cheap. Its main features were the cheap insurance, cheap spare parts and the low fuel consumption. Power was not its strong point but it was relatively easy to maintain. The Datsun 120Y Coupe seems a popular choice in ths line all over the world. Well maintained cars of this era today can fetch a good market rate. This car was a major choice as the family car for its sturdy nature and engine that just kept going. Though the engine was not powerful enough to overtake or climb a hill, especially when filled with people or goods. Still its outstanding fuel efficiency is what kept it in the market for a long time. Its popularity had to do with the mindset back then.

Many people wanted a car that was low on maintenance and gave good fuel efficiency. A car that gives good mileage is till considered as a great buy. With rising costs of fuel, such a car is still a great option. The only set back though are the parts required for the car. These are no longer that easily available. The car did have its faults, its handling capabilities were not too great and the steering was too small for the large car. Braking system too was not the best at its time. Many a drivers’ hearts raced when breaking hoping and praying it would stop in time. The Datsun120Y was really just meant for everyday commuting and not for racing and this is where Nissan won.
